What values hold us together

The quality of our coexistence depends on whether we can give and experience mutual respect, recognition, and appreciation as well as whether we are prepared to take joint responsibility for our society. The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany reflects a certain consensus of values, even if the term “value” is not used but norms are laid down. Norms are guides to action derived from values. The values behind the norms of the Basic Law are of fundamental importance for your own life in Germany, for social coexistence, for the legitimacy of the state order. The values are the “software of the mind” or the basis that influence and determine our actions. Our values determine our attitudes. Our attitudes lead to the corresponding actions.
